Children's Games in Davao

THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will launch in Davao City the Children's Games, a meet for 12 years old and under featuring 10 focus sports.

PSC Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez made the announcement to sports journalists on Saturday at the Pizza Hut of SM City Davao, saying he will hold the meet in October.

"This will be patterned after the World Children's Games in San Francisco. Our version of the Children's Games, however, will be a part of the sports for peace program in Mindanao. Though Mindanao in scope, we will start it here," Ramirez said.

The PSC chief said after the Beijing Olympics set in August, the PSC will shift focus on the revival of the Mindanao Friendship Games in Tubod, Lanao del Norte on November 5 to 10 and the Children's Games in October, among other priorities.

"The Children's Games will be for public schools. It will focus on 10 priority sports of the PSC," Ramirez said.

He cited boxing, taekwondo, wushu, athletics, and swimming as among the events to be included in the program.

But, being a basketball player himself, he said the sport would still be included.

"It's a sport everybody loves to watch. It's a crowd-drawing event so we will have basketball in the Children's Games," Ramirez said. (MLSA)
