Saturday, July 26, 2008 Under-14 chess underway Saturday
THE 33rd BKCC-DCSC Under 14 years old and below monthly chess tournament unfolds at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Blue Knight Chess Club along Bonifacio St., Davao City.
Club director Ronnie Tabudlong said the five-round Swiss System format competition allows each player to have 25 minutes to finish the game.
BKCC recently held a 16-under chessfest that was topped by Davao City's youngest FIDE Master John Ray Batucan.
Batucan, a Grade 6 student at the Don Juan dela Cruz Elementary School in Toril, is expected to vie for another title in Saturday's tournament along with fellow Vietnam Asean Age-Group Championships campaigner Rowelyn Joy Acedo of the Jose Maria College.
Both players, meanwhile, were hailed most outstanding chess players during the 14th So Kim Cheng Sports Foundation Awards Night on July 22 at the Grand Regal Hotel.
BKCC and the Davao City Sports Council, Inc. had been promoting grassroots chess program for the youth by conducting one or two age-group tournaments every month.
"Our club could only accommodate 15 players but since 20 or more are joining our tournaments, I'm making a little expansion so the others can also play," Tabudlong said. (MLSA)
