SM City helps promote works of Davao artists

DAVAO homegrown artists will now have one sponsor to lean on for support of showcasing their crafts and talents.

SM City mall manager Debby Go on Thursday led the launching of the "Artist of the Month" the only among SM malls in the country.

Go said they see the need for this kind of avenue because not many of Davao's good and excellent artists are given the opportunity to offer their products and talents to the public.

SM City, she said, will feature each month upcoming artists so the people will be able to know them and hopefully make the artist be known to the Davao market and in the country if not abroad.

Russel Alaba, SM brand manager, emphasized that the project is to promote art itself and those that they will allow to showcase their products are the not so commercialized artists.

He said they go for those who have the innovation and uniqueness in their presentation saying they also do research and the artist has to meet certain assessment.

The artist is allowed to come up with an exhibit or a show whichever is applicable at the SM City mall for free.

Featured now until the end of July are the works of abstract painter Gil V. Bumanlag who specializes in modern abstract paintings using acrylic and other medium.

Bumanlag said he uses the warm color scheme heavy on texture and composition to create an artwork not only for the eyes' delight but the touch as well.

"I make sure that my art pieces are unique and heavy on texture," he said.

He said he go embossed style saying he wants the viewer to also feel his artwork.

Bumanlag said there is market for his pieces and noticed that people are into acquiring paintings, which they adorn on their homes.

He said he has a tie up with the interior designers and architects here and sometimes his work of art goes with the construction package of residential homes and even offices.

His art pieces went as far as Manila even as he said that a Jordanian bought ten pieces of his paintings. He also said that some coffee shops in Davao are displaying the Bumanlag paintings.

Given the opportunity by SM of a solo exhibit, he expects that more people would discover his art pieces that they may acquire one. My art pieces are very much affordable, he added.
