SMB feeds 50 schoolchildren

ONE nutritious meal per child for a period of six months at five times a week is being provided to 50 undernourished schoolchildren ages 4-8 at the Barangay Darong Elementary School in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Now on its second year of project implementation, the project dubbed as "SMB's Malusog na Katawan Matalas na Isipan" is a flagship undertaking of the Department of Education's Adopt-A-School program designed to address the malnutrition concerns of school children.

The program started Wednesday.

The supplemental feeding project entails deworming and weighing prior to the actual feeding, monthly monitoring of each child's progress and the involvement of parents whose children are enrolled in the program.

"The right kind of food at the right time is important and should be given due attention to have a sharp mind, be active in school work and to prevent sickness. It is SMB's commitment to help in addressing malnutrition for the school children in Barangay Darong," San Miguel Brewery Inc. plant manager Noel C. Villanueva said in Wednesday's ceremonial feeding.

"We, in SMB believe that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow," he added.

The project is spearheaded by the San Miguel Davao Brewery and the San Miguel Foundation, in partnership with the Department of Education and the Darong Elementary School.

Similar feeding projects were launched in Mandaue and Bacolod for 200 school children.

Spanning more than a decade, San Miguel Davao Brewery Inc.'s interest in Mindanao does not end with investments. Its enduring commitment to corporate social responsibility is inherent in its core value and translated through its social development initiatives in the region.
