Friday, August 08, 2008 City to intervene if Hedcor, DCWD fail to reach agreement
THE City Government of Davao will be forced to step in if the Davao City Water District (DCWD) and Hedcor could not forge an agreement over the use of Tamugan River, which is vital to the operation of both corporations.
Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he will be forced to intervene in the matter if no agreement will be made after the 10-day deadline set by the City Council.
The mayor appealed to both companies for a "little liberality" so they could agree on the brewing issue. Duterte made the appeal when he appeared as guest at the television show of Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy Tuesday evening.
Militant organization Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and leaders of various people's organizations however demanded for a deeper investigation on Hedcor's and DCWD's projects in Tamugan, saying "the 10-day deadline is paltry obviously because the issues between Hedcor and DCWD are more serious than their claims of water rights over Tamugan River."
"What the council has seemingly overlooked in requiring Hedcor and DCWD to come up with an agreement for such a short span of time is the process of gathering the people's opinion on such public matter, more so that this involves their well being and of the coming generations," Bayan-SMR deputy secretary general Makpil Camacho said in a statement.
Bayan reiterated its worries of higher water rate and the privatization of the water utility with the imminent collaboration between DCWD and Hedcor for the use of the Tamugan River. (BOT)
