Crime incidents increase: Police

CRIME incidents in Davao City for the first semester of 2008 increased by 853 reported cases compared to the same period in 2007.

During the period of January to June 2008, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has listed 1,603 crime incidents. This represents a 113 percent increase compared to the 750 incidents during the same period in 2007.

Index crimes this year increased by 46.45 percent or an actual 495 total compared to last year's 328 reported incidents. Physical injuries top the list this year with 150 reported cases.

Police also reported a crime solution efficiency of 64.79 percent or solving 373 crimes out of the 495 reported.

Non-index crimes also registered a 168-percent increase this year with a total of 1,108 listed. This has a 696 incident difference with last year's 402.

The city police attributes the increase in crime incidents to three major reasons: depressing economic conditions and unemployment; urban migration; and gang-related activities that caused the increase of physical injury incidents. (GLP)
