THE Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) in Southern Mindanao has planned the "Handog sa Kabataan Career Caravan" for the maritime sector as a prelude to the National Maritime Weeks Celebration in September.

The caravan is a joint undertaking of the Dole-Southern Mindanao with the Philippine Association of Maritime Institutions (Pami), Philippine-Japan Manning Consultative Council Inc., Filipino Association for Mariner's Employment Inc., Philippine Maritime Association of the Philippines, International Maritime Association of the Philippines, Department of Education (DepEd), and maritime schools in Region 11.

The activity was centered on career and employment counseling for high school graduates of 2008, incoming fourth year high school, and selected students from the Department of Education's supervised national high schools; jobs fair for maritime occupations; and direct counseling of graduates of maritime schools who are not employed or working in non-maritime occupations.

Ofelia Domingo, Dole assistant regional director, said Friday that the jobs fair will be held from September 22 to 24 at the Gaisano Mall of Davao Atrium.

"Also, on August 19, we will have an orientation with the guidance counselors of the different high schools and colleges in Davao Region. We will inform them about the maritime career and we encourage them to re-echo the knowledge to their students for a month, we will also monitor them," Domingo said. (JGRS)
