Labor department: Land-based workers in demand
THE Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) has identified the overseas demand for land-based workers, saying that job openings for production and related workers, transport equipment operators and laborers accounted the biggest share of overseas demand.
This, Dole said is based on approved job orders during the first quarter of the year.

On the Labor Market Monitor recently released by the Dole, it said that a total of 166,371 job orders were approved during the first quarter of 2008.
Majority of it represents job openings for production and related workers, transport equipment operators, and laborers, which account for 39 percent of the total job orders approved.
This was followed by service workers with 25.4 percent, and professional technical and related workers which shared 20 percent of the total job openings approved.
Dole added that of the approved job orders during the period, 40,310 positions have already been filled up as of March this year.
Meanwhile, among the top ten skills that remained unfilled by April 1, 2008 include household service workers with 10,511 vacancies; nurses with 7,179; operator and factory workers with 5,300.
They are also in need of carpenters with 2,191; welders with 1,895; waiters, 1,855; pipefitters with 1,751; electricians with 1,328; masons with 1,074, and laborers with 1,062.
Dole added that the required skills are generally for the Middle East markets except for nurses where there is also a need in the United States, and for the factory workers that are approved job orders for Taiwan. (JGRS)
