High demand for skilled Filipino workers abroad

A GROWING demand for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) particularly in the construction and service sectors has been noted by the Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (Polo) in various countries of destinations.

In a report from the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), Polo has already projected the skills requirement, which are now in demand in the countries like Brunei, Japan, Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Northen Emirates, Tripoli in Libya, Malaysia, Singapore, Guam, Saipan, and Rome.

Polo report showed that of the enumerated countries, Brunei is in need more of skilled workers including laborer, welder, fitter, carpenter, and mason in the construction sector.

It also needs cook, waitress, and kitchen helper in restaurant and catering services; civil engineer, electrical engineer, and mechanical engineer under the engineering consultancy; and sales and shop assistant cashier under the sales services.

Guam, Libya, Saipan, and Jeddah all in need of construction workers, while Japan needs seafarers, nurse, caregiver, English teacher, and information technology (IT) staff.

Likewise, IT staff was also in demand in Malaysia, while hotel workers technicians, household workers, and skilled and semi-skilled workers are needed in Singapore, Rome, and in Dubai, respectively.

Dole-Southern Mindanao assistant regional director Ofelia Domingo said that most of these countries prefer to employ Filipinos because of their enthusiasm to learn and their English speaking capacity.

"Many of our schools today are offering programs to enhance the English proficiency of students, this is important in order to also enhance the quality of our graduates," Domingo said. (JGRS)
