Thursday, August 21, 2008 K'lagan lass bags Hiyas 2008 crown By Grace L. Plata
ANOTHER K'lagan lass bagged the Hiyas sa Kadayawan crown during the pageant finals held Tuesday night at the CAP Auditorium.
Julfa Joven fittingly followed the footsteps of fellow K'lagan, Samra Nuh, who won last year's title with an equally intelligent answer during the interview.
Citing her aim to educate indigenous people in order for them to be able to defend their ancestral homes, Joven bested the 9 other ladies who are also authentic members and representatives of Davao's indigenous and Muslim tribes.
The search was reformatted in 2007 by the city government saying the Hiyas should be of indigenous background.
The contestants were chosen by their respective communities or tribes and endorsed by the deputy mayors to the Kadayawan Executive Committee.
The first runner-up with the title of "Hiyas ng Kauswagan" was won by Sahira Damiano of the Maranao Tribe while the 2nd-runner up with the title of "Hiyas ng Tingusbawan" was won by Saivi Mohammad Sali of the Tausug Tribe.
The Hiyas sa Kadayawan will also get the chance to implement a community project aside from getting a cash prize of P50,000. (GLP)
