Wednesday, August 27, 2008 From Pops to Cups By Carlo P. Mallo
FOR what seemed to be the longest time in Davao City, the party scene was just on the verge of dying -- nothing could take the place of (now defunct) Pops Resto Bar.
It was more than the music, booze, and enthralling lights that made Pops become an instant hit to the hip and chic Davao crowd, it was all about the people who went there.
With an economic crisis and the rising conflict in the neighboring provinces, the Kadaywan festivities seemed to have become a bleak prospect, especially with the party scene of Davao. But lo and behold, as if the Bathalas have heard the whining and grumblings of Davao's partyphiles, an exclusive party was thrown last Friday night at the Cups and Lowercase lounge -- in true pops fashion.
And in true Kadayawan fashion, people partied the night away until the wee hours of the morning at Cups and Lowercase, in thanksgiving for the right to party again. Booze and food were overflowing, as bottle after bottle of Absolut Vodka turned up dry.
It was a reunion of sorts -- the regular staples of Davao's premier parties getting together once again in a safe environment without fear of flying bottles hitting one's precious face. The ladies wearing dresses -- you hardly see people dress up these days when they party during the weekend, and bachelors and married men all looking like bachelors again.
And yes, the party was on a Friday night -- true to the adage that it's so desperate to go out on a Saturday night. To the organizers of the event, namely Dodie Villafuerte, Kim Pamintuan, Bryan Lim, and Mads Macatangay, 'til the next parrrrty.
