Indon marks 63rd Year during Kadayawan fest
By Ana Felicia Dulay

ANOTHER equally grand celebration was observed during the Kadayawan Festival.

The Indonesian consulate in Davao City commemorated the 63rd Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia at the Apo View Hotel last August 22.

The evening, hosted by Indonesian Consul General Lalu Malik Partwana, witnessed some of the colorful dances of Indonesia.

Several delectable Indonesian pica-pica was also served during the cocktails.

Also present during the event were vice consuls Bernard Loesi and Sukarsono, to name a few. Most Indonesian nationals came in their national attire of batik polo shirt.

Foreign dignitaries from different consular offices were also present, as well representatives from the local government, councilors Diosdado Mahipus and Rachel Zozobrado.

According to data gathered from the web, the Indonesian Declaration of Independence was officially proclaimed on August 17, 1945. The declaration marked the start of the five year diplomatic and armed-resistance of the Indonesian National Revolution, fighting against the forces of the Netherlands.

The Dutch officially acknowledged Indonesia's independence in 1949.

Indonesia's incumbent president is Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono while Jusuf Kalla is the vice president.

It was one glorious event for a country so close to home and with ties that bind us close. Mindanao is home to at least 15,000 Indonesians, who, according to Pertawana, had already been granted their alien certificates of registration.

The presence of Indonesians here is the highest all over the country. Most are farmers and fishermen who also help contribute to the growth of our nation's development.

Kudos to our neighbor and we hope more economic ties bind us in the future.
