Cop chief: Clear lot near school for bombs

THE Davao City Police Office chief has ordered the clearing of the vacant lot near an elementary school in Sasa for possible bombs that may still be in the area.

"We are now clearing the area to make sure that there are no more vintage bombs in the area," Senior Superintendent Ramon Apolinario told Sun.Star Davao in an interview Thursday.

An improvised explosive device was found 15 meters away from an elementary school in Barangay Vicente Hizon, Davao City on Wednesday afternoon.

The 81mm mortar improvised explosive device was discovered at a vacant lot at the back of the Vicente Hizon Elementary School around 2:30 p.m.

Police reports showed that the improvised explosive device was discovered by a man who was bringing his cow to pasture. The incident was immediately reported to a team of bomb experts from the Philippine Air Force.

The bomb was later detonated by members of the Special Anti-Terrorism Unit of the DCPO and PAF bomb experts.

The police believe the bomb may have been intended to disrupt the Kadayawan Festivities last week but was aborted due to the tight security implemented throughout the city.

Meanwhile, Hizon Elementary School principal Filipinas Samblingo said that when she was told that a bomb was found at the back of their school, she advised the students to vacate their rooms.

On Thursday, only 20 percent of the number of students attended class. (CPM)
