Howitzer fires land near MSU-Marawi

HOWITZER fires allegedly landed near a university campus in Marawi City at the height of the military's barrage of heavy artillery against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) early this week.

MILF claimed residents of Marawi City and Lanao del Sur were dismayed with the firing of 105mm howitzers that landed some 100 meters away from the administration building of the state-run Mindanao State University (MSU)-Main Campus in Marawi City.

The MILF accused the military of indiscriminately firing its heavy artillery towards suspected positions of MILF forces in Piagapo, Lanao del Sur.

The students and faculty members of the university were reportedly traumatized by the firing of the mortars.

At the same time, thousands of civilians left their homes in Piagapo for fear of being hit by the continuing indiscriminate mortar shelling and air strikes by government forces.

AFP Joint Force Mindanao spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jose Maria Cuerpo however denied the claim of the MILF.

He said this is just part of the Moro rebel group's disinformation campaign to put the military in a bad light and to create chaos and confusion. (BOT)
