THE 2008 Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte-Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte Kadayawan Chess Festival Age-Group Tournament will get going on Saturday and Sunday at the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) students' lounge.
Chief arbiter Vincent Umayan said that some 150 players from the city and nearby cities will compete in boys and girls eight years old and under, 10-under, 12-under, 14-under, 16-under, and 18-under categories.
Umayan told members of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) during their weekly sports forum at the Tower Inn Thursday that all the top three winners of each event will pocket cash prizes and medals.
Vietnam Age-Group Chess Championships gold medalist John Ray Batucan and silver medalist Rowelyn Joy Acedo are among the heavy favorites along with Austin Jacob Literatus and Jerwell Andoy.
The two-day chessfest is presented by Mayor Duterte and Vice-Mayor Duterte and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-Southern Mindanao. (MLSA)
