Monday, September 01, 2008 AFP: Bomb found behind school could have been for Kadayawan
THE improvised explosive device attached to an 81mm mortar found in a vacant lot near the Vicnte Hizon Sr. Elementary School may have been intended to wreak havoc during the Kadayawan Festival, Major Armand Rico said.
Rico, spokesperson of the Eastern Mindanao Command, told Sun.Star Davao they received reports prior to the Kadayawan that the New People's Army (NPA) and some sectors of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) were having plans of disrupting the festivities.
"Both groups are considered as threats, and it doesn't matter from what group it comes from," Rico said, adding that they could not determine yet from which group the improvised explosive device came from.
Rico added that both groups also have in their possession ammunitions such as the 81mm mortar.
The City Government, police and military, thus, deserve commendation for the tight security they have jointly set up for the one-week activity that filled the city's streets to overflowing.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte had earlier thanked the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for ensuring the peace and order of Davao City during the weeklong festivities, which ran from August 18 to 24. (CPM)
