Prices of chicken increase by P5 per kilo

RETAIL prices of whole dressed chicken went up by P5 in local markets in Davao City.

But the present prices will remain stable for a couple of months, according to a chicken retailer and wholesaler at the Agdao public market.

"Since June, distributors only increased once, from P98, chicken prices are now placed at P103 per kilogram. We sell it at P115 per kilo from P110," Venus Antipuesto, chicken retailer and wholesaler at the Agdao public market, told Sun.Star Monday.

Antipuesto added that prices are expected to further increase before December, saying that the highest expected increase is by P10 per kilogram.

"It is always expected that prices, not only of chicken, but also prices of other commodities increase during holiday seasons," she said.

Meanwhile, considering the dire economic situation, Antipuesto claimed that business is not stable.

"Even if prices are fixed at P115, I seldom sell chicken for only P110 per kilo especially to regular customers who buy 20 to 30 heads of chicken per day," she said.

She revealed that she only earns P3 for each kilo of chicken sold.

"That makes our income unstable. We only earn a little because we also have expenses, we pay for our rental, electricity, and payment for our laborers," she disclosed.

Meanwhile, Antipuesto said prices of chicken choice cuts such as drumstick, wings, thigh, and breast, range from P120 to P125 per kilogram.

"I am really into retailing and wholesaling, but if customers ask for choice cuts, for example drumstick, we sell it for P125 per kilogram. The remaining parts are sold at P120 per kilo," she explained.

Antipuesto, on the other hand, believes that business in the next coming months, particularly in December, will be pretty good since people, she said, will really spend during the holiday season.
