Andoy wins chess title

TWELVE-year-old Fide Master John Ray Batucan settled for the silver medal as Jerwell Andoy went home with the gold in the boys 18-under of the just-concluded 2008 Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte-Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte Kadayawan Chess Festival Age-Group Tournament held at the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC).

The older Andoy, of Jose Maria College, tallied 6.5 points while Batucan had six points in the seven-round Swiss System format chessfest sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Region 11.

Talomo National High School's Cy Balbanera pocketed the bronze with five points in the meet presented by Mayor Duterte and Vice Mayor Duterte through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.

JMC's Rowelyn Joy Acedo, who was a silver medal performer for RP in the Vietnam Age-Group chessfest, bested fellow 6.5 scorer Davao Central College's Exiquila Apao via the tiebreak for the girls' under-14 gold. The latter took the silver while Crossing Bayabas National High School's Cristy Grace Ngo settled for the bronze.

Nieves Villarica National High School's Oberio Aglipay finished with six points to win the boys under-16 gold over Neptali Batucan, Clark Kent Anabieza and Jacob Literatus.

Tagum National High School's Kenneth Tabada bagged the boys under-14 gold while Mark Sumayan got the silver and University of Mindanao's Alvin Acas took the bronze.

James Apao of Magsaysay, Toril earned 6.5 points for the gold while Doņa Pilar's Daniel Borinaga had 5.5 points for silver in boys' under-12. Sta. Ana's Raymondwil Mirantes and Gilgio Gabrillo of BCT tied for the bronze with five points each.
