Sevilla, Yngayo, Acedo claim chess gold medals

MARY Rose Sevilla, Nikki Yngayo and Rowelyn Joy Acedo shared the limelight when they captured gold medals in the 2008 Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte-Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte Kadayawan Chess Festival Age-Group Tournament last August 30-31 at the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC).

Sevilla, from Jose Maria College, claimed the gold medal in the Girls Under 18.

Mary Israel Palero of HCDC won the silver, while Rizz Monique Juan of JMC settled for the bronze.

Yngayo captured the Under 16 gold over Jethrine Bayona and Jonna Liza Ranoco, who won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Acedo, also of JMC and who was a silver medal performer for the Philippine team in the Vietnam Age-Group tournament, bagged the gold in the Under 14, besting fellow 6.5 scorer Davao Central College's Exiquila Apao via the tiebreak.

Apao took the silver while Crossing Bayabas National High School's Cristy Grace Ngo settled for the bronze.

Joerliz Gimony in the Under 12 category and Lorraine Yngayo in the Under 8 class also got the gold.

Yna Krisha Yngayo won the bronze for the Under 12 category and Starjean Candia took the bronze. For the under 8, Irish Yngayo bagged the silver medal.

In the Boys Division, Aglipay Oberio of Nieves Villarica National High School in the Island Garden City of Samal claimed the gold in the Under 16.

Neptali Batucan grabbed the silver, while Clark Kent Anabieza and Jacob Literatus settled for the bronze medals.

In the Under 14, Kenneth Tabada of Tagum National High School captured the gold over Mark Sumayan of Nieves Villarica NHS and Alvin Acas of the University of Mindanao, who settled for the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

In the Under 12, the gold went to James Apao of Magsaysay, Toril.

The silver medal went to Daniel Borinaga of Doņa Pilar, while the bronze medal winners were Raymondwil Mirantes of Sta. Ana and Gilgio Gabrillo of BCT.

The event was sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) 11 under its regional director James Infiesto.
