Long firearms banned in Davao City: police

POLITICIANS who have many bodyguards with long firearms must beware when visiting Davao City.

Police Regional Office-Southern Mindanao director Andres Caro II said they will now be strictly implementing the ban against entry of long firearms in Davao City as part of their strengthened security measures in and around the Davao region.

Caro said police, military, and public officials, who enter Davao City, must deposit their long firearms at the checkpoint before they would be allowed entry.

He said those who would refuse to deposit their long firearms will be denied entry.

Caro clarified though that short firearms will still be allowed. He did not name names but vowed that no one will be spared from this policy.

He said they already sent information regarding this policy to Central Mindanao and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) so that politicians there who frequent Davao City with their hordes of bodyguards will be aware.

Task Force Davao chief Colonel Oscar Lactao also asked for the presence of media especially in their Sirawan checkpoint so they could personally witness the implementation of the policy.

Lactao said the presence of media at the checkpoints would also ease the tension between the implementing authorities and the visitors who might want to resist the new policy. (BOT)
