Garcia: Vijay Singh leads in The FedEx Cup 2008
By Imee Garcia

AS YOU probably already know, the FedEx Cup is ongoing in the United States with the first two (out of four) tournaments already played. The first two tournaments were The Barclays, which was won by Vijay Singh, and The Deutche Bank Championship, which was also won by Singh.

What is the FedEx Cup again? -- I found some information on the net, which is very helpful and hopefully, you will get a pretty good idea on what it is all about. By the way, they have made some changes from last year's format regarding the computation of points, and this gives others a better chance of getting into the final 30.

I will state some of the details that I got from the Internet named "FedEx 101."
"Over 250 PGA TOUR professionals have played a PGA TOUR event. At the end of the Wyndham Championship, only the top 144 in FedExCup Point Standings earn the right for a shot at the FedExCup trophy. After all, it's the Playoffs."

"Each week, the field will narrow, from 144 players to the final 30-player field at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca Cola. After The Barclays, the field narrows to 120 players: 24 get eliminated. After the Deutsche Bank Championship, 50 will go home to create a 70-player field. And another 40 end their season after the BMW Championship, forming the final 30-player field."

"The winner of the FedExCup will be the player who has accumulated the most points throughout the Playoffs, not necessarily the winner of THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca Cola. Each week, every player needs to finish as high as possible - not simply to stay in the field for the next event, but to have a chance to win the FedExCup."

As of this week, the top ten players are as follows: Vijay Singh (1st), Sergio Garcia (2nd), Mike Weir (3rd), Justin Leonard, Jim Furyk, Kevin Sutherland, Anthony Kim, Phil Michelson, Kenny Perry, and Ben Curtis.

FYI, Tiffany & Co., one of the world's best jewelry makers, created the FedExCup trophy. Last year was the first year that the PGA awarded the FedExCup trophy and it was given to Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods did not just get a trophy, he also received a huge prize money-- 10 million dollars. Tiger Woods is still recuperating from his surgery, and so the trophy is up for grabs. Vijay Singh is the one most likely to win this year, based on his performance in the first two events. But as they say, "it is never over until it's over."

So again, to sum it up, The FedEx Cup is comprised of four tournaments. It starts with the top 144 players of the PGA Tour competing in the first leg, which is The Barclays. The top 120 players will then proceed to the next leg, which is The Deutsche Bank Championship. And then, the top 70 players will continue at the BMW Championship. And the last leg, only the top 30 players will compete in the Tour Championship presented by Coca Cola.

The Ryder Cup tournament is very near! Two weeks to go! It will start on Friday, September 19 at 8:05 a.m. eastern time in the US. If I'm not mistaken, that is 8:05 p.m. Philippine time on September 19. Don't forget to watch it.

Congratulations to the winners of the 7th Chairman's Cup Invitational Golf Tournament held at the Apo Golf & Country Club last August 30, 2008. They are as follows:

Overall Net Champion - Faisal Samanodi
Class A Net Champion - Paul Larrabaster
