Ungab Cup chessfest opens Sept. 6

THE 1st Congressman Isidro T. Ungab Cup Inter-Team and Kiddies Chess Championships will start on September 6 at the Don Juan Central Elementary School covered court.

Congressman Ungab will grace the opening ceremonies starting at 1 p.m. Two matches will be played immediately after the opening program.

A total of six teams joined the Inter-Team event with five regular players and nine alternate in each team.

Lawyer Jong Guevarra heads the Guverra Law-Topalov squad, while Glen Paclar spearheads the Kasaparov Team.

Asean Age-Group Chess Championships double gold medalist John Rasy Batucan will lead the Davao City Councilor Karlo Bello-Kramnik Team, while Engineer Jun Atmosfera spearheads the Fischer Team.

The Discover Chess Studio-Alekhine Team, meanwhile, will be headed by Henry Fajardo while the Network Bank-Capablanca Team will have Chris Yap as the leader.

The champion team will receive P10,000 and the Congressman Ungab Cup, with the second and third finishers getting P5,000 and P3,000, respectively. There will also be prizes for individual top board players.

In the kiddies division, the champion will receive P800, a trophy and chess life kiddies mag., while the second placer is assured of P500, a medal and chess life kiddies mag.

The tournament is open to players from Toril district only and will serve as one of the highlights of the Toril fiesta celebration.

Two games will be played every Saturday only and will last until Oct. 4. Prizes will be awarded during the fiesta on Oct. 7.

The officers and members of the Metro Toril Chess Association (MTCA) are very excited to host this tournament, the biggest to be organized in Toril in terms of prizes and participants.

Guevarra, the MTCA president, said they are thankful to Ungab for making this tournament possible. (CRAM)
