Sunday, September 07, 2008 Finally, after 2 years By Stella A. Estremera
YUP, that's no exaggeration. This place has been our target for more than two years, but it has managed to elude us until last week.
Rewind... there's this place I regularly notice whenever I was on my way to hang out with my buddy Kublai at Ponce Suites or whenever I have to go to Victoria Plaza. It boasts of something I'd love to dig my teeth into -- honeyglazed grilled spare ribs.
It turned out that Carlos had also been drooling about it, and so we decided to try the place although it clearly said it was just for "take-out". It was closed. Hmmm... Maybe they're only open at night? We tried again in the evening, it was closed. Maybe it already closed?
But no, the next time I was on my way to Ponce Suites, there it was again, open and waiting for customers. Same case with Carlos, he drove by and noticed that it was open. In fact, it now had a table inside, apparently it was already accepting dine-in customers. And so we tried again, and it was closed. Haaay!
But we're not ourselves if we do not keep pushing our luck, and so when we again noticed that it was open. We agreed to drop by again one early evening sometime late last year... and I broke out is belly-jingling laughter. There, written on a piece of plywood were the words: "Temporarily closed for renovation".
"Bantay ka lang pag-open mo at pangit yang pagkain mo, tatapunan kita ng bomba!" we threatened as we looked for somewhere else to eat.
The place once again opened, this time with a bigger space for diners and I thought, this I must reserve for the one who has suffered with me. And so, Carlos and I were all set to have honey-glazed ribs for lunch (and it was open!!!!!) last week at Eddy's Grill Station along Vinzons Street near the corner of Dakudao Avenue in the Agdao end of Barrio Obrero.
Browsing through the menu, we came to realize that the place is for the carnivores, with not even a salad in its entree. We made do with their cookies; they have lots of cookies and cupcakes and macaroons there, really, really bad for us who have weak resolve when it comes to cookies.
We ordered their grilled ribs and a grilled longanisa (not because we thought that would be a good pair, but because it was the smallest in the menu and while the ribs was already big enough to feed two we had to know how the other food taste).
There was quite a long wait... the grilled ribs still pale and cooking, and taking their time to turn brown.
But it was okay, there's no need to look for a grenade. It tasted like honeyglazed grilled ribs, tender honeyglazed grilled ribs. The atchara is good though, green papaya pickled and aged.
The longanisa didn't impress me. I've tasted better ones. But the ribs are okay, especially when you're craving for a chunk of meat.
I liked their butter cookies. I was supposed to try the revel bars as well, which I bought to bring to the office, but I ended up giving them away because I was so full.
I'd love to try their chocolate chip cookies too. Maybe next time. And I hope they will stay open until I return...
