Tuesday, September 09, 2008 Alekhine, Fischer share lead in Ungab chessfest
CHESS Discovery Studio-Alekhine and Fischer Team scored four points to share the lead after the first round of the 1st Rep. Isidro T. Ungab Inter-Team and Kiddies Chess Championships Saturday at the on Juan Central Elementary School in Toril.
The Alekhine Team headed by Henry Fajardo defeated the Kasaparov Team of Glen Paclar, 4-1. Fajardo, playing on board one, outwitted Paclar in 38 moves of an Alekhine Defense.
The Fischer Team scored a 4-1 win over the Kramnik Team of Davao City Councilor Karlo Bello.
Asean Age-Group Chess Championships double gold medallist John Ray Batucan scored the only victory for Kramnik when he defeated Engineer Jun Atmosfera in 41 moves of a French Defense variation.
The ONB-Capablanca Team hacked out a 3.5-1.5 triumph over the Guevarra Law Topalov Team, with Chris Yap delivering the crucial point by beating lawyer Jong Guevarra in 46 moves of a Close Sicilian.
Representative Ungab officially opened the chess tournament during a brief opening ceremony and made the ceremonial moves with Batucan. (CRAM)
