JIB boosts welding course
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE JIB Welding Academy in Davao City, the largest and the most modern welding school in the Philippines today, has announced it will initiate measures to entice more people to take up welding course.

"Most people thought that welding career has low value. We want to change the impression of people by offering a two-year course in associate in engineering fabrication (welding and production technology)," Joji Ilagan-Bian, owner of JIB Welding Academy, said in an interview Thursday.

She said welding is a stepping stone to engineering fabrication.

For the two-year course that the academy will be offering, Bian said they will make the rates competitive at P25,000 to P30,000 per semester. She said the academy will be the first school to offer the course.

She said it is an investment to study with a welding course, saying that one can earn as much as P53,000 per month.

"Our students are given survey form so they would know and be informed of the salary scale if they choose what courses they want to enroll in," Bian said.

She further said demand for welders is very high in Middle East countries, Canada, China, and in Brunei.

"Here at JIB Welding Academy, we are targeting students to be globally competitive. We are incorporated with Australian technology and our training modules are fitted to the standard requirement of the global market," Bian said.

JIB Welding Academy celebrated its 1st anniversary on Thursday.

Bian said within a year, they were able to train 479 people, 75 percent of whom are already employed in different local and international companies.

She revealed that at present, a company that operates cruise ships, demands 600 welders from the academy, while another 500 welders for the Middle East are also needed.

Bian said this is a very good opportunity for Dabawenyos to enhance their skill and learn the basics in welding and have a chance to work abroad.

It was learned that 99.9 percent of the students enrolled at JIB Welding Academy want to work abroad.
