Kin assume posts of slain village execs

THE kin of two slain Barangay Fatima officials assumed posts as barangay councilors on Thursday.

Bernadette Varona, daughter of the late Fatima barangay captain Custodio Varona, and Rose Binggan, wife of the late councilor Crisologo Binggan, were sworn into office by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte at the City Hall on Wednesday afternoon.

The families of the two are known to have been fighting after the Varonas accused the Binggans of having a hand in the barangay captain's death in March 2008.

Accusations were hurled back when the late councilor Binggan was slain on June 25, 2008.

The rift was only resolve upon the mediation of Vice Mayor Sara Duterte in July.

The young Varona assumed position as councilor as she is the next highest vote placing number eight in the last barangay elections. Only seven out of the candidates became members of the barangay council.

Binggan, on the other hand, replaced her husband by virtue of a barangay resolution.

Election rules state that the barangay council shall decide nominees to the vacant post. The wife or next of kin can be appointed provided the barangay council and the mayor has agreed to it. (GLP)
