Friday, September 19, 2008 Ryder Cup Showdown without Tiger Woods By Imee Garcia
TWO Filipino detectives were investigating the murder of Juan Puruntong. "How was he killed?" asked pinoy detective no. 1. "He was shot with a golf gun," replied the other.
"A golf gun? What's a golf gun?" "I don't know, but it sure made a 'hole-in-Juan.'" Ok, ok. I know, it's corny.
Here's another one: Why do golfers wear two pairs of pants? Answer: In case they get a 'hole in one'. Yes, I know. It's corny too. Don't worry, I'll share more golf jokes next week.
Speaking of making a hole-in-one in golf, my Uncle Roy Quindoy from Fremont, California made his first hole-in-one a few months ago. He made his ace last April 15, which is my Grandma's (his mom's) birthday anniversary. What a coincidence.
I remember getting a text from him very early in the morning to let me know that he made a hole-in-one. My Auntie Emen said Uncle Roy was so happy he sent a message to thousands of friends that morning. I bet if he knew how to send quick messages via Yahoo messenger and Skype, he would have messaged a million people. Haha!
It was on the first hole of a golf course near his house, 185 yards to the pin. I've played that course a year ago and I remember that hole. It was a tough par 3 and difficult to put the ball on the green. What a feat! Congratulations Uncle Roy!
Ryder Cup is here! You better watch it since that competition is between the United States and Europe and it only happens once every two years. With Tiger Woods still recovering from surgery, I wonder how the US team will do. They say it would not matter because based on his performance in the previous Ryder Cup competitions, Tiger did not deliver as expected. That is so true.
Tiger did not win many of his matches when it came to the Ryder Cup. We will know soon enough if the US team will win or lose? Which team are you going to cheer for?
The US team captain this year is Paul Azinger. The members of his team are: Phil Michelson, Stewart Cink, Kenny Perry, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard, Ben Curtis, Boo Weekley, Chad Campbell, J.B. Holmes, Hunter Maham, and Steve Stricker.
The European team captain this year is Nick Faldo. The members of his team are: Paul Casey, Sergio Garcia, Soren Hansen, Padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Robert Karlsson, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poutler, Justine Rose, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, and Oliver Wilson.
Where are Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, and the other great players? They are not from Europe. They usually compete in the President's Cup, which is a competition between the United States and `the rest of the world' (international team). The next schedule for the President's Cup is in October 2009.
