Monday, September 29, 2008 Duterte warns vs Cha-cha before 2010
DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte reiterated Sunday his position against Charter change before 2010, claiming such effort is geared towards extension of terms of officials and not really for the common good.
He further urged Dabawenyos to junk any move to amend the Constitution.
In his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" Duterte said Congress, specifically the House of Representatives, is planning to push for a Constituent Assembly (Con-Ass) before the year ends.
He said the Con-Ass will be in the guise of seeking a peaceful solution to the Mindanao conflict with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), but he was quick to add this is just an excuse for present officials to perpetrate their hold in their elective positions.
"Pagkabaho anang style ninyo. I am against changing the Constitution before 2010. And as your mayor, I am urging the Dabawenyos not to support any Cha-cha efforts for now. Ayaw mo'g sugot ana," Duterte said.
The mayor said some officials, especially those in their last term, are just looking for ways on how to stay in power. He said he know of one official who wanted to become Prime Minister if ever the form of government is changed from presidential to parliamentary.
"Kung musugot mo ana, then you deserve that kind of government. It's your choice," he said. (BOT)
