Descallar chessfest opens

CLOSE to a 100 woodpushers from all over Davao Region are expected to show their wares in the 2nd Levi Descallar Rapid Chess Tournament opens at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) students' lounge.

The five-round Swiss System format chessfest expects participants from Compostela Valley, Panabo, Digos and Davao City.

It features 13 to 20 years old and 12-below categories. The 13-20 division first three winners will receive P1,000, P500 and P300 while the 12-below top three players will pocket P500, P400 and P200.

The top boys and girls eight years old and below, 10-below, 12-below, 14-below, 16-below and 18-below players will also receive certificates in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-sanctioned meet.

It is sponsored by Australia-based HCDC alumnus Levi Descallar who wants to help in promoting chess in the grassroots level. (MLSA)
