KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Gunmen shot dead an agent of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Davao Region while onboard his motorcycle along Notre Dame Avenue in Cotabato City, around 10 a.m. Monday.

Chief Superintendent Willie Dangane, chief of the Cotabato City police, identified the slain police investigator as SPO1 Bonifacio Sales Jr., assigned as CIDG agent based in Davao City.

Dangane, in a radio interview, said the gunmen onboard another motorcycle were trailing the victim and peppered Sales with M16 rifle bullets along Notre Dame Avenue in front of the office of a community newspaper there, The Mindanao Cross.

A witness told police that one of the attackers disembarked from his motorcycle, took the caliber .45 pistol from the waist of Sales, and used it to shoot the victim several times even as the victim was already hit and slumped on the cemented road.

Sales, reports said, was implicated in some 30 alleged "rubout" or killing of notorious criminals in Cotabato City, which took place many years ago.

Sales started his police career as a member of the Cotabato City police and later transferred as member of the CIDG in Southern Mindanao.

Sales father, Bonifacio Sales Sr., a bemedalled police officer, was also shot dead two years ago in Cotabato City.
