Dimakiling snares rapid chess title

UNIVERSITY of Mindanao (UM) player Adrian Dimakiling scored perfect five points to emerge juniors division champion in the 2nd Levi Descallar Rapid Chess Tournament held at the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) students' lounge on Sunday.

Dimakiling, who is also a qualifier in the 16th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships Grand Finals on November 8 and 9 at the SM Megamall, bested four-pointers Jay Bulicatin, Rodel Alsado, Aglipay Oberio and Joe Capatan who occupied the next four spots.

Bulicatin had superior tie break with 17 over Alsado's 16, Oberio's 14 and Capatan's 12.

Dimakiling went home with a cash prize of P1,000, while Bulicatin received P500 and Alsado pocketed P300 in the meet hosted by HCDC and managed by National Master (NM) Prospero "Bebot" Cruz.

The 12-below title and P500 top purse, meanwhile, went to Ramondwil Mirantes, who also was unbeaten after five rounds. Daniel Borinaga and James Bantugan placed second and third, respectively, for the P400 and P200 prizes.

Ella Grace Moulice was fourth in the meet sponsored by Descallar, an alumnus of HCDC, who wants to help promote grassroots chess development in the city.

The top boys and girls eight years old and below, 10-below, 12-below, 14-below, 16-below and 18-below players received certificates in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-sanctioned meet. (MLSA)
