Wednesday, October 08, 2008 Gov't releases P750T for mitigation program
A TOTAL of P750,000 was released to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Davao Region this year for the implementation of the Mitigation Program, a continuous program of the government to alleviate poverty.
This year's beneficiaries are the fisherfolks in some barangays of Don Marcelino in Davao del Sur, and in Pantukan, Compostela Valley Province.
"These areas were the ones identified by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 11 that have presence of malnourished children," George Campeon, BFAR-Southern Mindanao director, told Sun.Star Davao.
He said BFAR's role in the program is to distribute fishing gears and paraphernalia to these identified areas in the region.
Last year, Campeon said BFAR was able to distribute fishing paraphernalia such as hook and lines, nets, and others, to some barangays of San Isidro, Tarragona, and in Boston, all in the province of Davao Oriental.
"This year, we just had distributed fishing paraphernalia to the coastal barangays of Pantukan. Forty fisherfolks benefited from the distribution activity," Campeon said.
He added that BFAR spent P60,000 for the distribution activity. He also claimed that the P750,000 funds was supposed to be granted last year for the implementation of the mitigation program, but was just released this year. (JGRS)
