Creation of task force on climate change okayed
By Grace L Plata

THE Davao City Council has approved the formation of a task force on climate change that will conduct studies on the impact of climate change in Davao City.

This is in line with the preparation for the Climate Change Summit slated April 22, 2009.

City Council environment committee chair Leonardo Avila III, proponent of the resolution, said the move was based on a memorandum of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to come up with measures to combat climate change.

Avila said the studies of the task force would focus mainly on the impact of climate change on the city's vulnerable sectors and resources - water, agriculture, coastal areas and marine ecosystem.

"They will be holding a series of consultations, rapid assessment and making an inventory of policies and areas where we can intergrate measures on climate change," Avila said.

He added the task force will also be a planning body for the summit on climate change.

"We will now just be waiting for the mayor to approve this and formally create the task force through an executive order," Avila said.

"The outcome of the summit will determine the permanent functions and powers of the task force," he added.

The funding for the studies and activities of the task force, Avila said, will be sourced out from the disaster prevention budget of the city.
