Mayor warns cops anew vs corruption
By Ben O. Tesiorna

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte renewed his call for Davao City Police Office (DCPO) personnel to shy away from committing anomalies.

The call was made in light of Duterte's decision to overhaul the city's traffic group due to complaints from drivers.

In his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" on Sunday, Duterte said he is "exasperated to no end" due to persistent complaints about traffic cops mulcting drivers for their traffic infractions.

He advised cops to go to the City Hall if they need some financial assistance and not extort money from motorists.

"Kung gusto ninyo ug painit, palitan ta mo ug pandesal. I-distribute nako na sa mga presinto. If you are in need, go to the City Hall kay basin ug makatabang ko ninyo (If you want snacks, I will buy pandesal for you. I will distribute these to the precincts. Go to the City Hall for your needs, I might be able to help you)," Duterte said.

He said the very reason that he decided to transfer all personnel from the traffic division of the DCPO to various police precincts was the complaints against traffic enforcers who are notoriously asking money from motorists.

Duterte said he had long been pleading the traffic enforcers to refrain from their extortion activities, but to no avail.

He said he already asked DCPO director Ramon Apolinario to hire new traffic enforcers from the new batch of police graduates to ensure that fresh and uncorrupted blood are infused into the said division.
