By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

THE Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) emerged as over-all champion in the 7th Davao City Inter-School Age-Group Swim Meet held at the Ladislawa Country Club over the weekend.

AdHU collected a total of 29 gold medals, 35 silvers and 26 bronzes in the elementary and secondary divisions while the University of Mindanao (UM) ruled the college level.

UM came in second after bagging 21 golds, 22 silvers and 17 bronzes. The Maryknoll High School of Panabo (MHSP) placed third with seven golds, six silvers and 10 bronzes.

The meet was organized by the Davao City Swimming Association in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and City Government of Davao.

The top three teams received trophies while the individual winners in each event got gold, silver and bronze medals from DCSA president Deedee Gonzales during the awarding rites.

AdDU's Jose Antonio Banes, Korinne Trinidad and Kiko Isaguirre, UM's Junie Barani and Joyfe Tumulac, Stella Maris Academy of Davao's Katrina Aguelo, Janna de Luna and MHSP's Le'an Cantil were among the top performers of the two-day swim fest.

A total of 103 tankers from 19 schools from Davao City, Island Garden City of Samal, Panabo and General Santos joined the meet.

Banes and Trinidad grabbed identical three golds and one silver in boys and girls six-under events while Isaguirre pocketed four silvers in the boys 15-17.

Barani copped four golds while Tumulac captured three golds along with Marmie Pega and Julienne Zuniga for UM, which sent 20 swimmers in the annual competition launched since 2001.

Aguelo, on her part, annexed five golds while de Luna salvaged four silvers and Cantil harvested four golds in girls 13-14.

Gonzales said, "I'm happy that some public schools are getting involved in this meet. I hope to see more participants next year."

She cited Brix Morados of the Nieves Villarica National High School in the Island Garden City of Samal as a promising discovery.
