Bartolo, Ambasa rule Merco run

UNHERALDED Elmer Bartolo and multi-titled Monalisa Ambasa captured the men's and women's 21-K titles, respectively, in the Merco 62nd Anniversary 3rd Fun Run held in an out-and-back course at Merco Bolton Branch.

Bartolo clocked one hour, nine minutes and 34 seconds to beat Angelito Sibayan (1:09:35) and Rafael Poliquit (1:12:08), who placed second and third, respectively.

Ambansa breasted the tape at 1:26:12 to prevail over veteran Stella Mamac Diaz (1:26:41) and Merlie Edulantes (1:37:42) in the annual fun run organized by the Merco Group of Companies to benefit the Maharlika Charity Foundation.

In the 10k run, Jonel Boncit bested Joselito Dugos, Edelino Cortez, Placido Diaz and Joven Tobias for the men's crown, while Judelyn Miranda emerged champion in the distaff side over next four finishers Vivian Avergonzado, Judy Ann Montibon, April Rose Diaz and Nicheren Panerio.

The 5K titles, meanwhile, went to Michael Barrosa and Emil Avergonzado among a total of 1,109 entries.

Barrosa sped past Philip Ocon, Brian Lupio, Jomer Boncit, Gilbert Maluyo, Klent Panerio, Mario Ecalner, Jaime Valencia, Joel Pardilio and Ernesto Alsa, while Avergonzado pulled off the win over Cynthia Jaro, Cellie Rose Jaro, Nezel Delima, Ruffa Sorongon, Criselyn Jaro, Gene Beth Cantila, Mae Andival, Silver Comaling and Sacha Diaz.

Cash prizes were awarded to the winners in the running event officiated by Davao Sunday Runners Club and sponsored by Selecta and Nestle Food Services. It is also backed up by Merco Quality Cakes and Merco Quality Bread.

This year's event, which attracted a total of 1,256 runners, surpassed the turnout of entries in the past two stagings. (MLSA)
