TANJAY CITY, Negros Oriental -- The Holy Cross of Davao College Crusaders and University of Mindanao Wildcats opened their bid in the 13th Philippine University Games on a bright note after drubbing respective foes in Day 1 of the men's basketball competition at the Osmeña Park covered court here.
The Crusaders clobbered Holy Name University of Bohol, 99-57 in Bracket C encounter, while the Wildcats routed University of the Assumption, 72-62, in Bracket B match.
It was an easy debut win for the Crusaders, who sailed to an 18 points lead, 48-30, at halftime and never looked back to barge their way to the winning column.
Holy Cross coach Adel Gino Nobleza used all his seven players and six of them scored in double figures, unexpectedly led by second stringer rookie Jed Benitez, who poured in 19 points, including four triples.
Al Etcuban and Arthur Japson chipped in 16 and 14 points, respectively, while Kirk James Blanco, Bryan Rosete and Ogie Rosales had 12 points apiece.
Playing superbly in both ends of the floor, the Wildcats notched their first victory to join with Day 1 Bracket B victors UAAP champs Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles and Saint Louis University of Baguio City.
Michael Angalan led the charge for UM with 18 points. Arnold Adormeo added 16 markers for the Wildcats, who will face the Blue Eagles on Monday at 5 p.m.
Over at the Foundation University Gym, Holy Cross of Davao College men's volleyball team demolished St. Paul University of Dumaguete City, 25-8, 25-13, 25-7.
The University of Mindanao women's volleyball team also started its title quest on a high note, beating University of the Philippines-Diliman, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23.
Sharing the spotlight was first timer Jose Maria College women's volleyball team, which trounced University of the Assumption, 25-18, 25-6, 25-13.
