Igacos, GSC tankers in Children's Games

CLOSE to a 100 tankers will vie for honors in the first-ever Mindanao Children's Games swimming meet on November 16 at the Ladislawa Country Club 25-meter pool in Buhangin.

Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (PASA) regional director Deedee Gonzalez bared this during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.

Swimming was not included in the original roster of events but Gonzalez said newly appointed Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner Akiko Thomson, a former PASA secretary-general and former national team member, added the sport during a recent meeting with local national sports associations (NSAs) in Davao City.

"The competition is for 12 years old and below swimmers both from private and public schools. It will have the six years old and under, seven to eight, nine to 10 and 11-12 categories," Gonzalez said.

She said participants must be born in 1996 and onwards, must submit photocopy of original birth certificate and school certification for being a bona fide student.

This early, the Nieves Villarica Elementary School of the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS) and F. Bangoy Elementary School and Sta. Ana Elementary School of Davao City confirmed their participation.

Gonzalez said private school swimmers still have the edge over public school tankers being more advanced in their training and having more access to swimming facilities.

Swimming teams from Panabo and General Santos City are also expected to participate.

The MCG, which is part of the Sports for Peace program of PSC chairman William "Butch" Ramirez, will also feature basketball, volleyball, football, table tennis, taekwondo, chess and baseball events. MLSA
