Tuesday, November 04, 2008 2 landslide-prone villages still occupied
RESIDENTS continue living in two villages in Maco, Compostela Valley identified to be landslide-prone, even with the local government’s “forcible evacuation” measures.
Governor Arturo Uy said the number of residents still staying in the critical areas has, however, dwindled after the government established a temporary relocation site.
He said only 20 percent of the total population in Barangay Masara remained in the area while about 60 percent of the population stayed behind in Mainit.
Uy said they expect more residents in the two barangays to leave their houses once government starts developing a permanent relocation site for the more than 400 families affected by the landslide threat.
He said the Provincial Government is allocating P20 million for the permanent relocation site.
The September 6 and 7 landslides in Masara killed more than 30 people and displaced thousands more. (BOT)
