Wednesday, November 05, 2008 S. Mindanao ranks 2nd contributor in Mindanao export performance
DAVAO Region was identified to have the second highest percentage share in terms of the regional export performance in Mindanao, the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) reported.
In the Mindanao's Foreign Trade Performance Report for the first semester of 2008 of the Medco, it said that Davao Region shared 33.11 percent in the export performance of Mindanao as of June this year, accounting for a total of US$508 million in export value.
Medco said that Northern Mindanao or Region 10 contributed the highest percentage share at 33.80 percent or US$519 million during the period.
Meanwhile, Region 12 ranked third with a percentage share of 20.50 percent or US$315 million, while Region 9, Caraga, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) ranked fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
In terms of growth rate, Region 9 or the Zamboanga Peninsula registered the highest rate in exports. It recorded a 76.03 percent increase during the first six months of the year as compared to the same level in 2007.
Medco said that coconut oil exports of the Zamboanga Peninsula have an 83 percent share of the total export earnings of the region with a difference of 18 percentage points compared in the first six months last year.
Coconut oil was the top export earner of Mindanao for the first semester of the year which has a share of 31.31 percent in export revenue of the island. Fresh banana ranked as the second top earner, while prepared or preserved fish was ranked third.
Coconut oil registered a value of US$481.1 million, banana, US$204.86 million, and preserved fish has total export revenue of US$103.45 million during the period. (JGRS)
