Saturday, November 22, 2008 Pagasa warns of slides, flashfloods in Davao By Carlo P. Mallo
THE country's weather bureau has warned of possible landslides and flashfloods that may be caused by an inter-tropical convergent zone over Southern Mindanao while the tail end of a cold front is affecting Northern Luzon.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the weather disturbance currently affecting Mindanao is expected to bring heavy rains and thunderstorms, which may trigger landslides and flashfloods throughout the region.
Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Southern Mindanao Chief Liza Maso told Sun.Star that they are closely monitoring highly critical areas that include the provinces of Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley.
"We are basing our list on the data made by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau," Maso said.
Landslides and flashfloods have already occurred in two provinces of Southern Mindanao.
In its extended forecast, the Pagasa expects a rainy weekend for Southern Mindanao, especially during late afternoon and early evenings. Lightning will also be prevalent during nighttime.
Temperatures in the city are expected to peak at 30 degrees Celsius and at a low of 23 degrees Celsius.
