PRICES of chicken and pork are expected to increase by as much as P20 this week as Dabawenyos celebrate Christmas Day on December 25.

Based on a monitoring conducted over the weekend in one of the biggest public markets in Davao City, prices of meat have started to soar, although very minimal.

In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, Venus Antipuesto, chicken vendor, and Bebing Intoy, pork vendor, both at Agdao public market, said that prices of meat are stable for the past two months, until Saturday.

They also expect the meat prices to increase further this week.

"Prices of pork meat usually increase during the Christmas week. Last year, the increase was gradual, it started with a five-peso increase, but it went up by as much as P20," Intoy said.

On Saturday, Intoy said pork meat is placed at P145 to P150 per kilogram, while pork ribs was pegged at P145 and P120 per kilogram for special and ordinary, respectively.

Intoy said meat trading this time is not that good as compared to last year's. She said, this month, she can only sell an average of 50 kilograms of pork in a day compared to 80 kilograms in the same period last year.

But she said she is hopeful that business will improve starting this week.

As to the chicken prices, Antipuesto said the current price of whole dressed chicken, which is placed at P110 to P115 per kilogram, is quite high as compared to prices last year.

"The prevailing prices of chicken are fixed since October. Last year, it is lower, it just went up when it was already a week before Christmas," Antipuesto said.

Antipuesto also expects higher prices of chicken this week, but she failed to estimate as to how much would be the increase.

"Prices of fuel have already gone down, so I could not tell whether prices will increase whether by P5 or P10. It will just depend on the demand," she said.
