Rody the crooner and poster boy?

HE LOVES singing, but seldom do Dabawenyos see him belt out a tune.

However, in last Sunday's "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" television program, Dabawenyos finally heard Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte sing one of his favorite songs at a party last week for the city councilors held at the After Dark bar.

The mayor serenaded the councilors with "Ikaw" which talks about endless love. This song is also usually sung at weddings.

Co-host city Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta jokingly asked Duterte if a singing career is up next for the mayor, especially since he is on his last term as local chief executive.

"Kelan ang release ng album mayor," Acosta jested.

After seeing the video clip, a surprised Duterte simply smiled and dismissed Acosta's banter.

For those who frequent After Dark, Duterte's watering hole, and have witnessed the mayor sing, many agree he could carry a tune. Other favorite songs of Duterte are McArthur's Park and Balud sa Kapalaran.

Later in the same program, two calendars with pictures of Duterte in 1992 and 1949 were shown. The 1949 calendar showed a very young Rody in a bicycle, while the 1992 calendar showed the mayor in his big bike and looking very youthful.

Duterte said he wanted to release a calendar for next year and instructed his staff to look for a picture of him when he was young. He said he is now thinking twice about the calendars.

Acosta again bantered the mayor that he could easily become a poster boy after the end of his term. (BOT)
