Rody to resign in 2009?

RESIGNING next year is one move Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte is mulling over as he approaches the end of his term as city mayor.

In a message to Davao media during a party Sunday, Duterte said he is thinking of resigning in 2009 so he could take a much-needed respite from politics and work.

He said with Vice Mayor Sara Duterte to replace him, he is assured that the city is in good hands.

"Pero kung dili pa si Inday ang mupuli sa akoa, asa man ko muresign (If it weren't Inday who would replace me, I will not think of resigning)," Duterte said smiling.

The mayor however said his decision is still not final as he is still weighing things.

Duterte has long expressed a desire to go on a long vacation.

The mayor on Sunday said the security threat in the city also makes him sick but denied outright that he is dying from cancer as some critics of his have spread as of late.

"What I have is Barret's esophagus, you check out what it is. I do not have cancer," Duterte said.

Barrett's esophagus refers to an abnormal change in the cells of the lower end of the esophagus thought to be caused by damage from chronic acid exposure, or reflux esophagitis, the inflammation of the esophagus.

Duterte has been in politics since 1986 when he was appointed vice mayor.

In 1988, he ran and won as mayor until 1998. He became a congressman from 1998 until 2001. He became city mayor again in 2001 and holds office until now.

Duterte said he is a made-man now and would not mind leaving anytime.
