Masanguid to stage bigger basketball event in 2009

A BIGGER and much exciting basketball tournament to include commercial players of Davao City will be staged in Barangay R. Castillo next year.

Barangay chief Mario I. Masanguid on Monday said he will hold a second inter-barangay basketball tournament aside from coming up with an Open event where he will invite at least two commercial teams.

"There will be a bigger basketball tournament in our barangay next year and we will invite commercial players to make the competition exciting for everybody," said Masanguid, who successfully staged the Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament this year where a total of 14 teams saw action.

Masanguid said he offered big cash prizes for the basketball tournament.

"The budget came from my own pocket," he said.

Senator Rodolfo Biazon, Davao City Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte and a good number of village chiefs even graced the tournament opening in August to underscore the importance of his event.

Masanguid said he will also improve the covered court and will change the ring boards into fiber glasses. Among his plans is to also have an electronic scoreboard in the future.

"We will really come up with an exciting event next year," said Masanguid, who hosts a daily radio program over dxGO entitled Kumbati: Isumbong Mo sa mga Kapitan."

Aside from sports events, Masanguid is also giving priority to health and infrastructure in running R. Castillo, one of the cleanest barangays in Davao.

Masanguid said he got a P3 million budget from Biazon for the construction and improvement of their drainage and another P3 million from Second District Rep. Vincent Garcia for other projects. (CRAM)
