Young man shot while buying beer

A YOUNG man is in critical condition after he was shot while buying beer at a neighborhood store on Monday night in Balusong Extension, Barangay Matina Crossing, Davao City.

Police are investigating the storeowner as it appears that the gunshot came from inside.

The victim, who was hit in the chest, was identified as John Rey Astacaan, 25, a construction worker and resident of Balusong Extension.

Investigation conducted by P03 Dominador Vitor Jr., of the Talomo Police Station, showed the victim was about to buy beer from a store owned by Gonzalo and Crisanta Jumang-it around midnight Monday when he was shot.

Astacaan was brought by his friends, who were having a drinking spree nearby, to the Davao Medical Center (DMC) where he remains in critical condition as of this posting Tuesday.

According to the victim, he believes Gonzalo shot him on purpose because he awoke him from his sleep to buy beer.

At first, the Jumang-it couple denied the allegations and said they do not own any gun and that Astacaan was shot by another person. They added that the victim's friends were noisy as they were having their drinking spree.

But the Talomo Police found a hole at the couple's house.

Authorities believe either one of the couple could have fired the gun.

In a radio interview, Gonzalo admitted that he fired a shot to silence the group and that the victim was hit accidentally. (AD)
