Thursday, January 15, 2009 No re-routing in Uyanguren By Grace L. Plata
A RE-ROUTING scheme for the Chinese New Year on January 24-27 will not be created by the Traffic Management Center for Magsaysay Avenue or Uyanguren.
"The drivers can utilize the roads that will connect them to their supposed routes. Basta diha lang gihapon sila sa area maglibot. Lisud man gud kung i-specify nato asa lang sila dapat muagi kay basi magkagubot hinuon (They just have to go around the area, it's better that way because if we specify where they should pass, it might create an even bigger jam)," TMC Chief Celso Bruno Gempesaw said in a telephone interview Wednesday.
He added there is no need for a re-routing scheme as the event will only be for three days and the roads are only temporarily closed for brief periods.
"Most of this, gabii pa gyud (are at night). We all know nga wala kaayo activity or vehicles na nagaagi sa Chinatown basta gabii na (Not so many vehicles pass through or do many activities happen in Chinatown at night).
"Almost all establishments close after usual business hours," Gempesaw said.
The schedules of the road closure are as follows:
* From the Unity Arch (Magsaysay Avenue fronting Magsaysay Park) to the corner of Lizada St. (5:30 p.m. of January 24 to 2 a.m. of January 25);
* From the Friendship Arch (the entire Magsaysay Avenue) to Magsaysay Park (3 p.m. of January 25 to 2 a.m. of January 26);
* From the Friendship Arch to the Unity Arch which spans the corners of C.M. Recto St. to Magsaysay Park (5:30 p.m. of January 26 to 2 a.m. of January 27).
The areas will be closed for festival activities such as Chinese film showing, night market, concert and fireworks display via live satellite feed.
