Larena opens gate to development
By Nanette D. Pajunar

MANY firsts make this bustling town in the Province of Siquijor unique: It is the port of entry in the province, the commercial and business center of this so-called Island of Fire, it is the home of the only state college in this part of Central Visayas, and the host of the first ever radio station in the island.

No wonder that Mayor Dean Samson Villa has mobilized the town's resources to develop the place as befits its standing among the island's other municipalities.

As a starter, last April 15, 2002, Mayor Villa officially renamed Larena Social Centre and inaugurated it as the Larena Queengate Center.

The renaming of the center was made possible through a resolution from the Sangguniang Bayan that acknowledged it as the town's social and sports landmark.

Complementing the center is the newly-built Food Court at the port area fronting the PUJ Terminal and Veterans Park and Monument.
As entry port, the Larena pier caters to different sea transport like fast crafts, pump boats and big ships plying local and foreign waters. At present, the port is being extended and rehabilitated at a cost of P38.9 million accessed from different sources.

Larena prides itself as the province's commercial and business center. As such, it is home to telephone landlines, Internet cafes and other communication facilities, banks, and flourishing business establishments.

It is also the island's premier education center housing Siquijor State College, the only state college of the province, attracting students from many areas of the Visayas and Mindanao because of its top caliber education program.

In the heart of the town lies the province's first ever radio station: the 98.7 Hot FM Radyo Natin-Larena.

For the first time, a radio station beams its signal from the island entertaining the people with its sounds and music and helping them to get closer to the rest of the region, the nation and the world through information.

Truly, this is one part of the island that is afire with the enthusiasm for economic, social, cultural and political advancement.
