Cattle disease spreads to city; 1 death noted By Joe E. Medinilla
THE cattle disease that has hit towns and cities in Negros Oriental has spread to Dumaguete City, killing one cow and affecting 25 others, said a report from the Provincial Veterinary Office.
The office revealed that it has received reports of animals affected by the dreaded animal disease hemorrhagic septecimia since August.
Mardonia Nadela of the provincial veterinary office said that since that period the number of affected cattle has soared to 2,984 from more than 1,300 in early September, while the number of carabaos suffering from the disease went up to 105.
So far, Nadela said, 52 cattle have already perished from the ailment that is marked by blood spots in animal stool and bleeding.
The most affected areas are in La Libertad, Mabinay, Sta. Catalina, and Guihulngan, and has spread to Vallehermoso, Bindoy, Jimalalud, Tayasan, Zamboanguita, Basay, Sibulan, and the cities of Canlaon, Bais, Tanjay, Bayawan and Dumaguete.
The provincial veterinary office has already sought the help of the regional office of the Department of Agriculture in Cebu for additional drugs and vaccines to arrest a possible epidemic.
In Dumaguete City, the office of the city veterinary has already been alerted and advised to contain the disease to avoid further spreading it to other barangays. |
