Metro Dumaguete eyes P2M worth of projects By Jimmy P. Abayon
THE mayors of the towns of Sibulan, Bacong, Valencia, and Dumaguete City Monday agreed to create a technical working group to strengthen cooperation for a common growth direction under the umbrella of the Metro Dumaguete concept.
Present during the meeting were Mayor Agustin Perdices of Dumaguete City, Mayor Lenin Alviola of Bacong, Mayor Antonio Renacia of Sibulan, Mayor Rodolfo Gonzales of Valencia and their planning and development officers.
The technical working group, to be composed of representatives from each local government unit, will identify the priority projects and programs that will have a common impact on each member.
Engineer Dominador Dumalag, Jr., Dumaguete City administrator, will head the group.
Initial concerns that will be tackled by the proposed technical body include the construction of infrastructures such as the Dumaguete's planned circumferential road linking the four local governments together and developing the tourism potentials of Sibulan and Bacong.
One important concern the mayors agreed to address is the cooperation and coordination among their local police forces through a mutual program to curb criminality and maintain peace and order.
"Kon ana-a ang kahusay ug kalinaw walay rason nga dili mosunod and mga maayong programa sa Metro Dumaguete," Perdices said during the meeting. (If there is peace and order, there is no reason why Metro Dumaguete will not succeed.)
Mayor Gonzales said his town would support the programs under the metropolitan concept if these will be for the benefit of the people and not for the personal interests of a few officials.
Meanwhile, the four mayors agreed to put up an initial P2 million budget for projects under the metro concept.
Mayor Perdices pledged P500,000 while Bacong, Sibulan and Valencia will shell out another P500,000 each.
The mayors agreed to court Rep. Herminio Teves (3rd district, Negros Oriental) and Rep. Emilio Macias II (2nd District, Negros Oriental) for an additional half a million pesos each since Bacong and Valencia fall under the third district and Sibulan and Dumaguete City under the second district.
Mayor Perdices is optimistic that their initial projects will be ready for implementation before the end of the year.
"Dugay-dugay na man gayud ning maong plano, manghinaut ta nga madali ug masugdan dayon kini, it will be faster than what it was in the past years," Perdices said. |
